Sandvik Details Efforts To Help Achieve UN’s Sustainable Development Goals
Sandvik, a global engineering company based in Stockholm, Sweden, has announced its active support of the 17 goals that make up the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Furthermore, Sandvik partnered with the UN and global news provider Reuters to produce a film that demonstrates its commitment. Entitled “Sandvik: Creating A Sustainable Future Is Creating Better Business,” the film is available to view on YouTube and the SDG Business Hub. (Click here to watch it on YouTube.)
On The Forefront
Established in 1862 and operating today in 150 countries, Sandvik offers products and services that include metal-cutting tools and tooling systems, mining and rock excavation equipment, stainless steels, special alloys, titanium, and additive manufacturing services. Björn Rosengren, Sandvik president and CEO, notes in the film that Sandvik has been on the forefront of sustainability efforts and is already making considerable investments. Beyond working to reduce its water usage, Sandvik details sustainability efforts in the areas of energy efficiency, scrap material regeneration, carbon emissions reduction, reuse and recycling of products in the production chain, and other areas.
Noting that it takes a “holistic view” toward sustainability, Sandvik says “new, sustainable solutions that exceed customer expectations and full responsibility for the production chain are decisive factors for our success.” Or, in other words, “striving to fulfil the SDGs and striving to capitalize on business opportunities go hand in hand.”
Call For Action
The UN describes the SDG as a “call for action by all countries” to “promote prosperity while protecting the planet.” With a 2030 target date, the goals “recognize that ending poverty must go hand in hand with strategies that build economic growth.” Overall, the SDG provides a blueprint for reaching a better, more sustainable future for everyone. Sandvik has pinpointed seven goals particularly relevant to its business, and highlighted two in its movie, including No. 9, “Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation,” and No. 12, “Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.”
